Have you ever seen rows of colorful fruits, vegetables, flowers, and homemade foods all in one place? That is called a farmers market! A farmers market is a place where farmers and growers bring fresh foods and products to sell directly to people in their community instead of supermarkets.
Many foods at farmers markets are picked very recently, sometimes only a day or two before the market. That means the fruits and vegetables are often fresher, brighter, and full of flavor. You might find crunchy cucumbers, juicy strawberries, leafy lettuce, fresh herbs, and tomatoes in many different colors and shapes.
Farmers markets are also special because you can meet the people who grow the food. Farmers can answer questions about how plants are grown and which foods are in season. Some farmers even let kids touch or smell herbs and vegetables to learn more about them.
Every farmers market is a little different. Some markets have fresh bread, honey, flowers, jams, eggs, or handmade items. Musicians may play music while families walk around and explore. Farmers markets can feel busy, colorful, and full of friendly people working together in the community.
Shopping at a farmers market can also help local farms and businesses. When people buy food from nearby farmers, they help support the people growing food close to home. Farmers markets bring communities together while helping people enjoy fresh and healthy foods.

Try It!
Visit a farmers market with an adult and explore all the different foods you can find. Look for fruits or vegetables you have never seen before. Notice the colors, smells, shapes, and sizes of the foods around you.
Choose one new fruit, vegetable, or herb to learn about. Ask the farmer what it is called, how it grows, or how people like to eat it. You may discover a brand-new favorite food!
While you walk around, count how many colors of fruits and vegetables you can spot. Can you find red tomatoes, orange carrots, green herbs, purple cabbage, or yellow squash?
When you get home, help wash and prepare the fresh food you picked. Take a bite and see if you notice a difference in taste or freshness compared to foods from other stores.
