Have you ever noticed that some vegetables grow on long, winding stems instead of standing upright? These stems are called vines. Plants like cucumbers, pumpkins, squash, and some types of beans grow on vines as they spread across the ground or climb upward.
Growing on a vine helps a plant reach more sunlight. As the vine grows longer, it can spread its leaves into new areas where they can collect energy from the sun. More sunlight helps the plant grow and produce fruits.
Vines also help plants make room for lots of vegetables. Instead of growing everything in one small area, the plant can spread out and use more space. This gives fruits room to develop without crowding each other.
Some vines have special parts called tendrils. Tendrils are thin, curly structures that wrap around fences, trellises, or other supports. They act almost like tiny plant hands, helping the vine climb and stay attached.
Whether they grow across the ground or climb into the air, vines are an important way some plants grow and survive. The next time you see a cucumber or pumpkin plant, take a closer look at the twisting stems that help it explore the world around it.

Try It!
Draw a vine plant and create a path showing where you think it might grow over the next few weeks. How far could it travel? Could it wrap around a support or climb upward?
